SERS Scientists Champion NAMs for Food Supplement Safety Assessment

SERS scientists co-ordinated a two-part industry webinar series exploring how non-animal methods and approaches are advancing food supplement safety assessment and supporting next generation risk assessment.

Non-animal methods (NAMs) are playing an increasingly important role in the safety assessment of food supplement ingredients. To support knowledge sharing in this rapidly evolving field, SERS scientists recently co-ordinated a two-part webinar series with the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), that took place on May 13 and May 20, 2026.

The programme brought together experts from across industry to discuss established and emerging non-animal NAMs and approaches, including threshold of toxicological concern (TTC), read-across, omics technologies, computational modelling and artificial intelligence. Adam Wood, Scientist-Human Safety at Unilever, also shared outcomes from a recent FoodDrinkEurope initiative focused on expanding the use of NAMs in food safety assessment and supporting the transition away from animal testing. The webinars attracted strong interest from the food supplement community, highlighting the growing role of NAMs in next generation risk assessment and reinforcing SERS' leadership in advancing modern approaches to safety science.
